Ok, I've had it for awhile and I have to downgrade it. Yeah, the value for the money is still there. But if you have the extra money to go for a better unit, go for it. Simply put ... it is a HASSLE to put bikes on and take them off.
The top-plate on this thing is simply ridiculous. 2 long screws that have to be cranked a bunch of times is part of the problem. Bikes that don't perfectly balance (wedging the top plate against the screws) is the other part of the problem. If you have a hybrid/commuter bike or offroad bike with thicker frames than typical street bikes these problems will be even worse.
If you're looking for something to haul bikes long distances solidly and securely and you don't want to take them off the car regularly, this will be fine (though in this case you won't really need a swing-away rack). If you like to take your bikes with you every day to commute or on vacation spots ... this is -not- the rack for you.
I'll be paying the money for a better rack soon and either try to sell this or put it on my fiancee's car for when we take hers instead.

For the price this is a fine bike rack. I -almost- wish I'd spent the extra $150-200 to get a rack that didn't have the funky top plate. But that's mostly because I'm lazy and want the bikes on/off quicker. The swivel seems solid. It does sway some but not badly.

I've owned this bike rack for almost 3 months and find it to be a solid well built unit to handle 2 bikes easily and 3 with of effort. If you have a swing down tailgate on your truck or suv then this is a great way to go. Made of steel this bike mount slides in to the hitch receiver with little effort.

I have had my rack for many years now. It has withstood a harsh marine environment and is still in great shape. The top plate has a lock. We have had 3 bikes on it many times and you simply alternate the direction of the bikes. Having the rack swing out and then be able to pivot the top to place the bikes alongside the car is a very useful feature. The only complaint I have is the length of the threads on the mount. It is designed to accomodate fat tube frames. If you don't mount a fat tube framed bike, you spend some time screwing on the securing knobs. We have found that shaking the bicycles a little while finishing up securing the knobs creates a very good tight fit over the cross tube. Overall a well designed and well built product.

Great idea, spotty executionSep 19, 2008
This swing-away bike rack allows us to keep three bikes racked AND LOCKED while still using the door to our truck camper. We use a cable lock that we thread through a permanent eye on the truck bumper and then through all six wheels and three frames. That's the great part.
The spotty part is that there appears to be only one way to hang the three bikes: The middle one has to be upside-down. :( This problem could have been remedied by allowing more space on the horizontal tube to which the bikes are mounted.
Overall, I would definitely, definitely choose this swing-away rack over the higher priced name-brand models!
