1DANGER! - Buyer BewareMay 08, 2010
We purchased 2 sets of these J-hooks for use on our CR-V with factory mounted roof rack. One of the J-Hooks ripped apart on the very first outing leaving us scrambling on the side of the road trying to secure the kayak, which was hanging off the vehicle, enough to pull into a parking lot where we could better secure the kayaks for the drive home. The only fortunate thing is that we were on a state highway rather than an interstate, and the incident happened less than a 1/4 mile from an ACE hardware where we were able to buy enough rope to secure the kayaks to our CR-V roof rack and drive the 30-miles home. We are feeling lucky to be alive and to have survived the incident with no damage to us, the kayaks, or the vehicle. All I can say is buyer beware, this hardware can't be trusted!

5Great product - especially for smaller carsApr 18, 2010

These racks are reasonably priced and only take about 10 minutes to install. I bought two sets of these racks and can now transport two kayaks on my little Ford Focus with no problem. They're a good, solid product at a great price. I'm very happy!

3SportRack ReviewApr 14, 2010
I bought 2 sets of this kayak carrier so I could carry more than one kayak on the top of my SUV.

The Good:
It allows me to carry 2 13 foot kayaks.
Roughly half the price of the Thule 835PRO Hull-a-Port Pro.

The Bad:
The design needs work:
(A) The open part (bottom of the J) doesn't allow you to strap to the carrier, you have to strap to the truck. This puts outward rotational stress on the carrier where it attaches to the crossbars (the tighter you strap it, the more stress).
(B) The piece that contacts the crossbar and provides friction is made of plastic and, as it ages, it provides less and less friction. Also, only 2 wing nuts are used to tighten the carrier against the crossbar (arranged in a diagonal pattern).
(C) There is good resistance to crosswinds pushing the kayak toward the center of the roof. However, with 2 kayaks mounted, a crosswind is pushing one of the kayaks toward the outside of the roof - and there is very little resistance to this. In fact, a strong crosswind broke one of the racks and now I always tie the kayaks together (if carrying 2) or tie the one kayak to the opposite side of the truck (if carrying 1).

Summary: I use the racks quite a bit and they work well enough but I kind of wish I had gone with the Hull-a-Port 835PRO model.

5Excellent quality, very secureSep 17, 2009
My only guess is that the manufacturer has made changes since some of the earlier reviews were made. I used this to tie down an Old Town Loon 15t tandem kayak, which is 14'11" long and 30" wide, and I had so much extra strap that I had to tie up the extra so it wouldn't hit the car while I was driving. The front and rear ties would be easier if they were straps instead of ropes, but once again there was more than enough to tie it to my 99 Toyota Sienna. It is true that I couldn't pull my van into the garage without taking them off first, but installation/removal is less than two minutes, so I can't take marks off for that. Once tied down it was obvious that my kayak wasn't going anywhere!

4Just about the same as excellent for lessApr 18, 2009
This rack, obviously made by Thule or its manufacturer, is identical in all visible respects to Thule's Model 815 Rack with the exception of the boat straps and the padding on the bars. The mounting system (which is perfect for Thule's rectangular cross-bars and great for round cross-bars) is the same top-notch construction. The bow and stern guy lines are more than adequate if you've perfected your Trucker's Hitch and the padding on the rack is just fine. The only downside is that the buckles on the boat straps are not padded as the Thule straps are. A few bucks to upgrade those and you have a Thule rack set for about 2/3rds the Thule price. Quite a deal in my book and on my boat.
